Lala was born in Kashmir in the twenties of the fourteenth century. The legend about her life and poetry was passed down in oral tradition and official references were found only about four hundred years after her death. During her lifetime, various currents of some of the central spiritual teachings of the East intersected in Kashmir. Lala did not belong to any of them. Her path is characterized by an inner search and experiential experience, and does not obey dogma or ancient texts. Her colloquial pronunciation, which is not aimed at philosophy or an institutionalized religion, but at the common people, has allowed hundreds of lines of her poetry to continue to be an active part of discourse in Kashmir throughout the generations and up to our time.
