At the age of 20, she leaves everything and follows her passion. Fabian Verdier, a brilliant art student, gives up a promising study scholarship in France and the freedom of Western life, and travels alone to the depths of communist China - following the urge to explore and learn the secrets of Chinese calligraphy and painting, ancient arts that the revolution of culture has laid waste to. In the early 1980s, she finds herself a stranger and lost in Sichuan, in an art school run by the party. Out of the thirst for knowledge of a total artist, she faces the language barriers and the suspicion of the Chinese, the crowding, the poverty and the dirt around her, and above all - with the party's brutal interrogation methods. A remote guy, in conditions of survival, she gets to know those whose art the government made despised and forgotten, and pushed them to the fringes of society. While completely dissociating herself from the West, Fabian becomes the protégé of the great artists - and they open up to her and introduce her to the fountains of knowledge that spans thousands of years. In her journey she meets the love of her life, and builds herself without compromise as a world-renowned esteemed artist.
