In Praise of Shadows, the celebrated essay by Junichiro Tanizaki (1886-1965), one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, was published in 1933, and even eighty years later continues to fascinate readers all over the world. Tanizaki explains his personal view of Japanese aesthetics. He writes about the design of the traditional room, stationery and food, and even about the design of the ideal toilet. "The advantage of the nail polish bowl is in the feeling that arises in the moment between removing the lid and bringing the bowl to the mouth, and in looking into the dim depth of the quiet liquid whose color is almost indistinguishable from the sides of the vessel in which it is placed. You cannot see what is inside the dimness of the bowl, but you can feel with your hand the soft movements of the soup, thin drops accumulate on the lips of the vessel, the steam rises and climbs from the inside, and the aroma they carry with them right up to your mouth hints at the expected taste. What a difference in the feeling of the moment compared to a western style soup served in a shallow white bowl. That moment is a moment of mystery, one might even say, a moment with a taste of Zen." In his rich and associative style, he describes the uniqueness of a culture that prefers shadows and darkness, but these recede before the modern electric light that penetrates every corner. Doron b.
